The Innovative Project by Dublin High School Seniors
In an inspiring endeavor, Saanivi and Shivansh, two ambitious seniors at Dublin High School, have embarked on a groundbreaking project titled "Exploring Olfactory Receptors as Novel Targets for Cancer Therapy." Their research aims to uncover the potential hidden within olfactory receptors, traditionally understood as sensory receptors for smell, and leverages them in the fight against cancer.
Methodology: High-Throughput Docking and Machine Learning
To kickstart their research, Saanivi and Shivansh undertook the formidable task of screening approximately 1.4 million molecules using advanced high-throughput docking techniques. This exhaustive screening generated around 1,800 molecular descriptors for each compound. The application of machine learning was pivotal, as it allowed the duo to predict the bioactivity of the ligands with precision.
Identification of Promising Drug Candidates
Employing a finely-tuned support vector machine, the students achieved remarkable accuracy in their predictions, visualizing the compounds in a 3D chemical space to better understand their interactions. They meticulously evaluated the drug-likeness and safety profiles of their findings, identifying four promising candidates suitable for further investigation.
Subsequent validation of these candidates through in vitro dual-luciferase assays confirmed their viability, particularly for the receptor OR51E2, indicating a significant breakthrough in this innovative approach to cancer therapy. This research not only highlights the potential of olfactory receptors in medicine but also showcases the exceptional capabilities of young scientists in contributing to the field of oncology.
